About Williston Basin Speedway

Williston Basin Speedway is a dirt oval at the Upper Missouri Valley Fairgrounds in Williston, North Dakota, in the far northwest corner of the state. It races Saturday nights at 7:00 with a full IMCA class list, and its location near the Montana line and the Canadian border makes it a genuine crossroads track. Drivers from three states and two provinces show up here.

Racing in the Oil Patch

Williston sits at the heart of the Bakken, closer to Montana than to most of North Dakota and only about an hour from the Canadian border. That isolation works in the track's favor. There is nothing else within a long drive, so when Williston Basin runs a show, it is the only game in a very large area.

The track is on the Upper Missouri Valley Fairgrounds, which means the parking, restrooms and access infrastructure are built for county fair crowds rather than a weekly race night.

Saturday Night Racing

Racing runs Saturday nights starting at 7:00 through the season.

The class list is IMCA sanctioned: Modifieds, Stock Cars, Northern Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks, plus Junior Slingshots. That Slingshot division gives younger drivers a real place to start, which matters in a region where the next track is a long way off.

Admission is genuinely inexpensive, with separate adult, senior and veteran, and youth pricing, and children seven and under admitted free. For a family, this is one of the cheaper nights out in western North Dakota.

Marquee Events

The season carries several events bigger than a regular points night.

The Fall Round Up closes the year. The Can-Am Shootout reflects the track's position near the border, drawing competition from both sides of the line. The Dakota Classic Modified Tour, the long running IMCA tour that criss crosses North Dakota and Saskatchewan each July, includes Williston on its route. The Tougher Than Dirt Tour also stops here.

Those tour dates are the nights to circle. A touring series pulling into a track this remote brings out drivers and crowds that a weekly show does not.

Getting There

The track is on 53rd Street East at the Upper Missouri Valley Fairgrounds in Williston, reachable from US 2 and US 85. Williston is roughly two hours west of Minot and about an hour from both the Montana state line and the Canadian border.

Schedules, results and rain calls go out on the track's Facebook page and its MyRacePass listing, and both are actively used. Tickets for bigger events have been sold through the fairgrounds as well.
