About Southwest Speedway

Southwest Speedway is a medium banked one third mile clay oval at 22 47th Street SW in Dickinson, North Dakota, south of the city off Highway 22. It runs IMCA sanctioned racing on Saturday nights through the summer, averaging around three race nights a month from spring into fall. It is the dirt track for the southwest corner of the state and it draws drivers from across the region.

Southwest Speedway

Rebuilt and Still Growing

The facility was substantially remodeled in the fall of 2004, gaining new lights, new grandstands and a new pit area. That investment is what turned it into a modern racing venue rather than a rough country track, and it still shows in the setup today.

The property is built with families in mind. Accessible entrances, wheelchair accessible seating and accessible restrooms are all part of the facility, which is not something every rural dirt track can claim.

Classes and Race Night

The weekly card runs IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Northern Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and INEX Legends, along with Junior Slingshots. Open wingless sprint cars have appeared on selected nights, with any wingless sprint welcome to enter.

That Junior Slingshots class matters. It gives young drivers a real points chasing division rather than a novelty exhibition, and it feeds the classes above it.

Race night runs on Mountain time, which catches out visitors from the eastern half of the Dakotas. Pits open in the morning or early afternoon, the draw booth opens in the late afternoon, grandstands open shortly after, and the green flag falls in the early evening. Exact times shift by event, so check the schedule.

Admission is priced with separate senior, adult and child rates, and pit passes are sold by class. One driver friendly detail worth knowing: the track pays cash at the draw booth at the end of the night.

For anyone who cannot make it out, races have been streamed live online.

Championship Night and Special Events

Championship night in August closes the points season, and it regularly comes down to the wire. North Dakota weather takes races out of the schedule most years, which compresses the points chase and leaves several classes undecided going into the final night.

The season calendar also carries themed nights, including kids night with power wheel races, first responder night with free grandstand entry for anyone with a badge, and memorial races honoring people connected to the track.

Getting There

The track is south of Dickinson off Highway 22 on 47th Street SW. Dickinson sits on I-94 in southwest North Dakota, near Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the badlands, so a race weekend combines easily with time outdoors.

The track phone is 320-293-6609. Schedules, race night details and weather calls go out on the track’s Facebook page, which the staff use actively and where they will even check in late arriving drivers by message.
