About Jefferson County Speedway

Jefferson County Speedway is a 1/5 mile dirt oval at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Fairbury, Nebraska. It is one of the smallest ovals in the state and one of the most entertaining, home to the JayHusker Micro Series and to an annual stop on the USAC National Midget schedule. Racing runs Saturday nights from April through September, and every July the track hosts a three day midget event that turns the whole town out.

A Fifth Mile Bullring

At a fifth of a mile, this is a genuinely tiny oval, and that shapes everything about it. Cars are never far from the grandstand, the whole field stays in view at once, and a race is over almost before you settle in. Micro sprints and midgets are exactly the right machines for it, which is why those are the classes that define the place.

The track sits on the county fairgrounds next to the rodeo arena, so the infrastructure is built for crowds and the campground sits right on the property.

JayHusker Micro Racing

The JayHusker Micro Series is the backbone of the season. These are 600cc non wing micro sprints, small open wheel cars that look like scaled down sprint cars and race every bit as hard. Restricted classes give younger drivers a step up, and IMCA Mod Lites, mini trucks and compacts have also run on the card.

Micro sprint racing is where a great many national level open wheel drivers start. Watch a JayHusker field on a fifth mile and you are watching the same skill set that shows up later in midgets and sprint cars.

The Midwest Midget Championship

The track's marquee event is the Riverside Chevrolet Midwest Midget Championship, which has now run for close to a decade and features the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series racing for a purse in the range of $40,000.

The format runs across three nights in July, deliberately timed to coincide with the Jefferson County Fair. Thursday brings midget practice and micro qualifying, followed by a free shrimp boil and barbecue at the campground that is open to fans, drivers and teams alike. Friday is a full USAC program. Saturday is the finale, capped by a 40 lap championship race, with the micros running their own main event for added money.

Free concerts follow the racing both nights at the beer garden. It is less a race weekend than a community festival, and it has become one of the marquee dates on the national midget calendar.

Tickets and Camping

Weekly racing is inexpensive, with adult, student and young child pricing and pit passes available.

The July midget weekend is priced separately by night, with reserved seating sold only as a multi day package and only in advance online. General admission is sold at the gate on race day and is not limited, so you will get in even if you decide last minute.

Camping with hookups sits a few hundred feet from the track, but spots are limited and sell out well ahead of the midget weekend. Dry camping is available on the south side of the track on a first come basis, and there are full hookup sites at Crystal Springs about a mile away.

Getting There

Fairbury is in Jefferson County in southeast Nebraska, near the Kansas line and about an hour southwest of Lincoln. The town sits on the Oregon Trail route, and the regional tourism office at visitoregontrail.org carries area lodging and camping information.
