About Sheyenne Speedway

Sheyenne Speedway is a quarter mile high banked dirt oval at 700 Prospect Street in Lisbon, North Dakota, in the southeastern part of the state. It is a volunteer run track that has been racing for more than fifty years, and it is built around exactly what it says it offers: affordable family entertainment and close side by side racing. The track runs WISSOTA sanctioned classes along with Legends and Mini Stocks.

Sheyenne Speedway

Fifty Years of Volunteer Racing

Racing in Lisbon began with annual events at the Ransom County Fair, run by Grand Forks promoter Jim Corcoran. When Corcoran wanted to move to a full time schedule, local enthusiasts decided the community should run its own show. Led by Jerry V. Thompson and Eldon Huether, they formed the Sheyenne River Racing Association in the spring of 1974, and the first association races ran that June.

The association changed its name to Sheyenne River Speedway in 2012, and the track is known today as Sheyenne Speedway. Through all of it the model has stayed the same: loyal fans, local drivers and volunteers who keep the place running.

The class structure has evolved with the times. Midwest Modifieds joined the weekly show in the 2000s. Mod Fours and Mini Trucks were tried and later dropped. The weekly night moved to Tuesday for a couple of seasons before returning to its traditional slot. In 2013 the track added Mini Stocks specifically to give new racers a way in, taking any front wheel or rear wheel drive car or truck with a four cylinder single cam engine, which keeps the cost of a first race car down.

Drivers developed here have won track championships and specials at tracks across the region, taken North Dakota state championships and finished in the top ten of WISSOTA national points.

Racing and Classes

The weekly card is built on WISSOTA divisions, including Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks and Hobby Stocks, along with Mini Stocks and INEX Legends. Short Trackers and Hornets have appeared on the schedule as well.

Special events bring in IMCA Modifieds and NLRA Late Models, giving the track a different look on its bigger nights. The Dakota Dream is among the marquee dates.

The race night has moved over the years, having run traditionally on Sundays and more recently on Thursdays, so confirm the current schedule before you plan around it. Racing starts at 7:00.

Family Priced

Admission here is among the cheapest racing you will find anywhere. Adult, senior and student tickets are all modestly priced and children five and under get in free, with pit passes available for those who want to be closer to the cars.

Fans have long treated this as a relaxed summer evening out rather than a formal event, and the atmosphere reflects that.

Getting There

The track is on Prospect Street in Lisbon, in Ransom County in southeastern North Dakota, about an hour southwest of Fargo along the Sheyenne River. The Sheyenne National Grassland sits nearby if you are making a weekend of it.

Schedules, results and rain calls go out on the track website, its Facebook page and its MyRacePass listing. The track phone is 701-799-9974.
