About Mid America Dragway

Mid America Dragway is a drag strip at 1823 East 160th Street South in Geuda Springs, Kansas, about six miles west of Arkansas City off Highway 166 near the Oklahoma line. It started life as a World War II airfield, became a drag strip in the 1960s, sat empty for seven years, and was brought back to life in 2018 by two brothers who grew up racing there. It runs from April through October as a member track of the World Drag Racing Alliance.

Mid America Dragway

From Airfield to Drag Strip

The strip was built during World War II as a landing field where planes refueled and pilots learned to fly. In the 1960s it was repurposed for drag racing, and for decades fast cars and farmland shared the property.

In 2011 the track went quiet and stayed that way for seven years. Jim and Chris Maybrier, who had grown up with it as their home track, bought the property and reopened it in 2018. That is the whole story of the place in one sentence: racers saving a track that would otherwise have become one more strip that used to exist.

The track was formerly NHRA sanctioned. In late 2023 it signed a multi year agreement with the World Drag Racing Alliance, whose own announcement described Mid America as a track built by racers for racers.

Racing at Mid America

The program is built around variety. Bracket racing forms the base of the schedule, with no prep racing, heads up classes and index classes on the calendar through the season.

Motorcycles are a real part of the program here, not an afterthought. Heads up events have included separate bike index classes, an E.T. bike class, a grudge bike class and a pro bracket bike category alongside the car classes, so a rider can build a full season at this track.

The no prep events are worth singling out. No prep racing runs on a surface without the traction compound a normal drag strip lays down, which rewards tuning and throttle control over raw horsepower. It is one of the fastest growing corners of the sport and draws a different crowd from a standard bracket night.

Facilities

For a rural strip, Mid America is well set up. The facility runs about 3,500 feet with concrete barriers down the track. Spectators get stadium style seating, and the restrooms are climate controlled, which matters more than you would think on a July afternoon in southern Kansas. Concessions are on site.

Getting There

The track sits in Sumner County in south central Kansas, about six miles west of Arkansas City on Highway 166 and roughly an hour south of Wichita. It is close enough to the state line that racers from northern Oklahoma treat it as a home track.

The season schedule is published on the track website each spring, and race day updates and weather calls go out on the track’s Facebook page.
